Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art that works with the natural flow of energy, or chi, to bring harmony, protection, and renewal into your home and life. At its heart, feng shui teaches that the spaces we live in hold energy, and that energy can either uplift us or weigh us down. By mindfully arranging your environment, clearing away stagnant or negative energy, and inviting balance through natural elements and intentional placement, you create a home that supports peace, clarity, and fresh beginnings.
Every home holds memories
Not just of the last occupant, but of everyone who has ever lived there and of every event that has occurred there. This is known in Feng Shui as predecessor energy – emotional, energetic and spiritual energies left behind in the spaces of a home. Sometimes the energy is less than positive and may need clearing.
Stagnant or negative energy can show up in any space as:
Emotional heaviness in certain rooms
A home that refuses to sell or sits empty
Frequent changes in ownership or tenancy
Repeating patterns of conflict, illness or stagnation for the residents
A room that just feels “off” or stuck, no matter what you do
How Feng Shui clears predecessor energy
In Feng Shui, we use specific tools to address stagnant or residual energy:
Salt bowls (overnight) to absorb depression or stuck vibes, literally a bowl of sea salt left overnight in the space, often with a metal implement such as a nail in it
Citrus oils ( commonly Lemon or Orange ) to shift scarcity, lack and financial worries, you can use peel from the fruit in water or more commonly today essential oils in water, shaken well
Sacred smoke (mugwort, frankincense etc) to clear grief, illness or spiritual residue, burnt carefully in the space, wafting the smoke into the corners and everywhere. Can be incense sticks or resin
Sound tools (bells, tuning forks) or clapping to break energetic loops of repeated behaviours or occurrences, sound each corner first then the rest of the space
Always clear the energies first, then activate fresh, vibrant energies to replace them. Energy must be reset before it can be renewed. Corners tend to hold stuck energy so don't forget to do those too. If you want to open the windows to work, feel free, you can open the front and back doors too.
Below you'll find a simplified chart showing which technique can be used for each issue in your space.
